Refer A Friend version 1.5 released!

Version 1.5 of our Refer a Friend add-on is now available! This update adds a new percentage based referral reward option and adds the ability to edit reward amounts after referrals are created. It also makes a major necessary change to how store credit is applied to orders. With WooCommerce version 2.7 hot on our heels, we have released this update to cater for some of the changes they will be introducing. Our aim is to provide you with the best experience possible, so a few changes have been necessary to ensure Refer a Friend runs smoothly.

Store credit changes for WooCommerce 2.7

In previous versions of Refer A Friend, store credit was applied to the checkout as a negative fee. For the most part, this worked well and had some advantages over using a coupon discount. For example, it allowed the store credit amount to be displayed as a separate line in the order totals. However, as of WooCommerce version 2.7, negative fees are no longer supported and we must switch to a programmatic coupon to apply store credit.

What does this mean for you? The main difference is simply that store credit will look slightly different in order admin screens, but for the advocate using the store credit the checkout experience will be the same. One side effect of this change is that store credit can no longer be used to pay for shipping costs but hopefully we can resolve this issue with WooCommerce in a future update.

Editable referral reward amounts

We have updated the referral details page to give store managers the ability to edit advocate reward amounts. These reward amounts directly control how much store credit the advocate has, so making these editable lets you make any store credit corrections as required. In addition, we improved the UX of the referral details page by reformatting the referral data into a table view.

Percentage based referrals rewards

A new, highly requested option has been added in this update which allows referral rewards to be percentage based. This new option had been added to the referral reward settings, and when you select this reward type, your advocates will be given store credit which is calculated as a percentage of what their friend spent in your store. If you set this percentage to 20% and a friend spends $50, the advocate will receive $10 store credit. This percentage can be adjusted to a value of your choosing.

New shortcodes

This update also comes with two new shortcodes which can be used to display the advocate’s referral coupon or link as plain text. By displaying the coupon or link you can give your advocates more flexibility when sharing and promoting your store.

  • [automatewoo_advocate_referral_coupon] is used to display the unique referral coupon when using coupon-based referrals. e.g. REFMOWXAKAVLZ
  • [automatewoo_advocate_referral_link] is used to display the referral link for link-based sharing. e.g. http://example.com/?awref=mowxakavlz

The major release of WooCommerce 2.7 may cause some compatibility issues and affect integrations. We appreciate your patience over the coming week and if you do encounter an issue do not hesitate to contact us.
